Ana Sofia Scheller
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ana Sofia Scheller began dancing at the age of six. At the age of nine, she began taking ballet lessons with Ketti Gallo (former principal dancer at the Teatro Colon) and Raúl Candal (former principal dancer at the Teatro Colon). At the age of 10, she was accepted into the Superior de Arte del Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. At the age of 13, she received a scholarship for three consecutive years as part of the Argentine National Presidential Award for Cultural Achievement in Classical Dance before moving to New York City. In 2000, she enrolled full-time at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of the New York City Ballet. At SAB, Scheller performed in the 2002 and 2003 Performances Masterclasses, dancing the title role in Ballo della Regina and the third movement of Brahms’ Schoenberg Quartet (Balanchine) and Aurora in the Wedding Pas de Deux from Sleeping Beauty (Martins).
In August 2003, Ms. Scheller joined the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, where she performed the leading roles in Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude (Forsythe), Symphony in C Major, and Tarantella (Balanchine).
In April 2004, she joined the New York City Ballet as a member of the ballet company. In December 2006, she was promoted to principal, and in May 2012, she became principal of the New York City Ballet.
At the age of 18, she was Julio Bocca’s partner as the main guest on his farewell world tour in Uruguay, Paraguay, Venezuela, and Madrid, Spain. In 2012, she was a guest at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo for a production of Cinderella as Cinderella under the direction of Luciano Canito.
She is also a guest artist in many galas around the world, such as the Nureyev Ballet Festival in Kazan (Russia), the Teatro Colón International Gala Competition (Argentina), the Buenos Aires Ballet Gala, the Beijing International Ballet and Choreography Competition, Singapore, and many others. In July 2017, she joined the San Francisco Ballet as a principal dancer under the direction of Helgi Tomasson. In September 2019, she joined the National Ballet of Ukraine, Kyiv as a principal dancer. Where she performed Swan Lake (Odette and Odile), The Sleeping Beauty (Aurora), Giselle (Giselle), La Sylphide (La Sylphide), and A Touch of Illusion by Ricardo Amarante.
